The Northview girls' soccer team scored early and often, in Wednesday's conference opener against West Vigo. The Knights got four goals from Hannah Minor, three from Emma Barnett and two from Krista Stearley while piling up a 13-0 victory over the Vikings.
"We saw a lot of good ideas and thoughts that we had been working with our forwards and midfielders making diagonal runs, using the space and attacking the corners," Northview coach Lauren Trennel said. "We saw a lot of that from the players tonight especially from our substitutes that stepped in and played some minutes in the varsity match tonight."
Kaysia Reberger got the Knights underway less than five minutes into the game as she scored off a rebound on a shot by Stearley. There was barely time for anyone to catch their breath before it was Stearley getting into the scorebook with a nifty move when she was faced with a one-on-one with the Vikings' goal keeper. Minor was next up when she found the net off a sideline pass from Libby Deckard for a 3-0 lead just 14 minutes into the game.
"We were slow to start, that was definitely an issue we had in the first 10 minutes or so, we needed to work the ball through the midfield and build our attack," Trennel said. "We were just kind of playing too direct. We eventually started using our center-mids and outside mids to work the ball to our forwards a little better."
Northview's fourth goal came less than a minute later as Minor scored for the second time off an assist from Brittany Fagg, which forced West Vigo to switch keepers.
The result wasn't much better for the Vikings, who saw Stearley score off an assist by Allison McWilliams for a five-goal advantage.
A stiff breeze was at Northview's back during the first half and their sixth goal was aided by the wind as Emma Barnett lofted a free kick 30 yards and into the net with 10:48 remaining in the half. The next goal came from Minor with an assist by Olivia Fulton. Lexi Bender and Barnett scored the final goals of a busy first half.
The second half saw the junior varsity team getting into the action as Barnett scored her final goal followed by Minor's final score. Melissa Lummis made the game 12-0 and McWilliams scored the final goal with an assist by Amanda Swenson.
Trennel was also happy with some of her players in the back too.
"Our returning senior Tara Summers has come back in excellent soccer mind condition I should say. She really took to heart what we taught last season and remembered those tactics," Trennel said. Some of the younger girls in the back, Sydney Buell, has great field vision in the center for us and Lexi (Bender) is a returning junior and we've seen some great things from her."
The Knights are now 2-1, 1-0 in the WIC and head to North Knox Thursday evening.
