A banged up Edgewood Mustang football team hung with the Northview Knights for two quarters on Friday night, but there was simply too much Jessie Miller for the visitors to handle in the WIC tilt.
Miller scored on a 90, an 87 and a one-yard bolt in the first half to put the Knights ahead by a tenuous 21-12 margin. However, it was the second half in which Northview simply wore Edgewood down and pounded out the victory.
"The bottom line is I'm proud of the kids, we got a win, but we've got a lot of things to work on and let's face it, Edgewood's beat up. They had quite a few of their better players on the sideline," Northview coach George Gettle said. "It probably would have been a little different game if they would have had those kids suit up. I think we're getting a little bit better, but we've still got a long way to go and the kids know that. We're not there yet. Hopefully this will give us a little positive reinforcement that we can be a pretty good football team and win some games if we play hard and do the right things."
Perhaps the biggest missing piece was senior running back Bryan Delos Santos, who ran four 175 yards and four scores in last year's slugfest that the Knights won. On this night however, it was Miller that shone under the bright lights.
The lone second half highlight for Edgewood was a successful onside kick to start the second half, but from there it was a slippery downhill slope.
After the Mustangs punted on that opening third quarter drive, Miller needed just one play to break through the defense for a 61-yard scoring run and a 28-12 lead. Edgewood couldn't get anything going on its second drive and punted the ball back to the Knights.
The Knights got a 26-yard pass from Dallas King to Miller and a 13-yard toss to Daniel Kimball to set up a five-yard scoring run for Miller and the rout was on.
Edgewood fumbled on the first play of its next drive as Jed Thomas recovered to give Northview a short field that set up Miller for a 13-yard TD run on the second play of the drive.
The next drive for the Mustangs didn't go much better as quarterback Grant Pederson threw an interception to Damon Hyatt, who made a leaping grab at the Knights' 46-yard line.
"I think for the most part in the second half it was a matter of attrition, we just wore them down," Gettle said of the lopsided final two periods of play.
King hit Patrick Durcholz for a 41-yard reception to set up Hyatt for a four-yard run to paydirt as the lead grew to 49-12.
Edgewood would run just two plays on its next drive with the second being a third lost fumble, this one recovered by Chance Talbot.
The Knights would cap their scoring with a pair of late TD runs by sophomore Conner Pierce.
All told, Northview ran for 393 yards as a team and each of the nine touchdowns came on the ground. It was Miller that stood out however as Gettle pointed out after the game.
"Jessie had a fabulous game, he runs extremely hard and for a big guy he does have some quicks," Gettle said of his junior back. "Once he was able to break through the line of scrimmage, and get into the open field, he's pretty hard to take down by a single defender. He did a great job of staying on track with his runs and the line gave him some holes to run through."
The Knights (1-1 overall, 1-0 WIC) remain at home to face Terre Haute North next Friday at 7 p.m.
