The Northview girls' golf team followed up a runner-up finish at the Western Indiana Conference tournament on Saturday by winning a tight battle with visiting Cascade in a dual match at Forest Park Golf Course on Monday evening.

The two teams were tied after four scored golfers with a 188 so the match went to the fifth-score tiebreaker and it was Macie Lynch's score of 49 that clinched the match for the Knights as Cascade's fifth score was a 58 by Sage Archer.

"Tonight's score is a product of all the hard work the girls have put in in practice and during the summer. They've been working on their putting a lot," Northview coach Bob Treash said. "Also, assistant coach Mike Lynch has been a big part of it too, it's hard to coach 10 kids by yourself. We're looking forward to sectional time, we'd like to beat (Terre Haute) South.

"That's why it's so important for those kids to keep playing and not give up. That (fifth) score won for us tonight and that's good," Treash added.

Northview's balanced scoring has been important to the team's improvements as the Knights got a 46 from both Karlie Atkinson and Sierra Girton. Keirsten Mikesell shot a 48 along with Megan Heaton with Lynch's 49 and Hillary Thomas' 52 wrapping up the varsity scores.

"Before we'd have a 46, a 45 and maybe a 49 then a 52, 54 or 55," Treash said of the dropping scores. "And now we had six girls that shot lower and it's very satisfying to see that."

The Cadets' Jessica Smith earned medalist honors with a score of 37.

The junior varsity also played well with strong finishes from the three girls on the course for Northview. Jensen Swaim shot a 48, Makenzie Brown carded a 49 and Kenzie Mager tallied a 58.

"There's two or three girls like Makenzie Brown, her confidence was kind of low and she shot 49 tonight," Treash said. "It's good to get her confidence back up, Kenzie Magers shot well and Jensen Swaim, I believe that's the first time she broke 50 tonight. So the scores are coming down."

The Knights are back in action on Wednesday evening with a home match against Owen Valley beginning at 4:30 p.m.
