On Monday, the Clay County commissioners met for a special meeting involving the contract for the demolition of the old jail.

At the beginning of the meeting, the commissioners accepted the contract with Arexco Inc., Spencer, for $38,450 for the demolition of the old jail.

After Arexco Inc. signs the contract, the commissioners will sign the document.

President Charlie Brown said he would like to have a pre-demolition meeting before any action takes place.

Meanwhile, quotes for the repairs of bridge No. 177 in Clay City were opened. The bridge, which has a floor made of wood, has been in place for more than 25 years.

The wood flooring is decaying and needs replaced.

The quotes were as followed:

* Wolf Excavating Inc., Cory -- $14,985

* BLs Contractors, Bowling Green -- $13,800

* CLR Inc., Bloomington --$34,605

* George R. Harvey and Son Inc., Danville -- $39,970

* Knust Excavating Inc., Brazil -- $16,750

The commissioners accepted the lowest quote from BLs Contractors for $13,800 subject to legal council, review and approval.

The contract will need to be signed by BLs Contractors before the commissioners sign it.

Commissioner Paul Sinders said he would like to see this project completed in time for farmers to use the bridge for harvest.

Officials have said the bridge should last for at least another 20 years after part of it is replaced.

You buy my 5 year old a rubber hammer and he would destroy that place in 30 minutes.
