North Clay volleyball tops Edgewood; cross country second

SPENCER -- North Clay's eighth-grade volleyball team opened with a victory, 25-16, 25-12, over Owen Valley on Tuesday.

Ashley Heck had 10 service points and three aces and Madison McDonald added 10 points with three aces as well. Bre Dove contributed seven points and three service aces, Zoe Orman, Sydney Joliff and Kaylee Cooper all had four points.

The Knights also had great success on the attack as Orman, Morgan Stearley, Gabby Horrall and Dove all had two kills apiece. McDonald and Alyssa Yocom each had three assists in the win.

On Wednesday night, the eighth-grade added a 25-20, 25-20 victory at Edgewood.

Dove led the team with 14 service points with two aces and Orman contributed nine points followed by seven by Cooper. Yocom, Stearley and Heck each had four points.

Cooper and Stearley each had four assists to lead the team with Yocom providing three. McDonald topped the squad with four kills, Heck had three and Orman drilled three kills.

North Clay cross country second in opener

CLINTON -- North Clay was second to Woodrow Wilson in both the boys and girls' meets in a four-way season opener that included South and North Vermillion on Tuesday.

The Woodrow Wilson boys' team took the top-two spots led by Sean Slayter's winning time of 10:25 as the Warriors scored 15 team points to top North Clay's 75. North Vermillion had 141 and South Vermillion had 144.

The Woodrow Wilson girls were led by Lauren Perrelle with a time of 12:32 as the Warriors scored a perfect 15 points to top North Clay's 94. North Vermillion was third with 95 and South Vermillion scored 164.

The Knights were led by Cameron Trout, who placed third in the boys' race at 11:00. Christian Herron placed ninth in 11:46 followed by Gaidj Evans in 11th at 11:57. Taelur Evans was 16th in 12:53, Tyler McNabb was 17th in 12:54. North Clay's Zack Reberger was 22nd in 13:37, Dawson Nelson was 23rd in 13:59, Caleb Simmons placed 28th in 13:32 and Jalen Satterfield took 29th in 14:44. Rounding out North Clay was Tanner Bachelor (34th, 15:04) and Matthew Fordice (36th, 15:12).

Full results of the girls' race were not available, however, North Clay was led by Kourtney Johnson's sixth-place time of 13:03 and Chelsea Hines was 19th in 15:01.

North Clay runs on Saturday in the State Preview Meet at LaVern Gibson at 11 a.m.
