Eagles and Snakes and Raptors ... Oh My!

Yes, folks, we will have all of the above, and more at the 3rd annual Clay County Extension Nature Day held at the Clay County 4-H Fairgrounds on State Road 59 just south of Brazil.

This free event is open to everyone, young and old alike. There will be over 25 events and activities going on from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. A program on snakes will be held at 11 a.m. Mark Booth from Take Flight! Wildlife Education will be presenting this action-packed program. Leslie Grow from the Hardy Lake Raptor Center will present a program on Birds of Prey at noon.

Other on-going events include:

Stream sampling, Edible and medicinal plans, Invasive plants, Know your woodlands, Boy Scouting 101, Indiana Birding, Bats of Indiana, Lawn and garden Q&A, Bees and beekeeping, Food preservation and dehydrating, Nutritious soups and granola snacks, Monarchs and Milkweed, Geocaching, Pond aeration, Indiana fossils, Herbs, Clay County Humane Society Adopt-A-Pet (Yes, they will have animals to adopt!), Reintroduction of the Bald Eagle, Exploring Dobbs Park Nature Center, Aquaculture and Tilapia, Turkey Run and Shades State Parks, Raccoon State Recreation Area and Mansfield Roller Mill, Electrical Safety, Bird house building for kids, Making a bird caller, Bird brains and magnets.

A new event this year is the photo contest. "Outdoors in the Wabash Valley" is the theme for the contest and there will be two categories. The youth category is for everyone up to 18-years-old. The adult contest is for everyone over the age of 18. There is no cost to enter the contest and the photos must be salon mounted or ready to hang. Bring your photo to the Extension Office by 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 9. They will be judged that evening and the winners will be announced at Nature Day on Sept. 10.

Since we have extended the hours for this years event, we thought you might get hungry while you are at Nature Day. No Worries!

The Clay County 4-H Poultry Club will be selling food to make money for their club.

I am told they will be serving hot dogs, chili, nachos, etc. so you shouldn't go hungry!

Now, if all of the above is not enough to entice you to join us, I have another surprise. We will have door prizes! There will be a drawing every hour for the prizes and you will need to be present to win.

I hope you will plan on joining us on Sept. 10 at the Clay County 4-H Fair Grounds. I guarantee you will have a fun time!
