Department benefit set

BOWLING GREEN -- A 5K run/walk, car/bike cruise-in, freewill breakfast and more will be hosted Sept. 17, with all benefits going to the Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department to help get its brush truck up and going.

The vehicle has been down for a while. In addition, money will also be used to update equipment such as radios, pagers and gear.

There are many events planned for the day, including mass casualty trailer and smoke house for spectators to tour through while learning about fire safety. The department is also working on having a tent set up to conduct free blood pressure checks and health and wellness information.

Several local agencies will take part in the benefit, including the Indiana State Police, Clay County Sheriff's Department, Clay County Sheriff's Posse, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Indiana University Wellness on Wheels, The Riley Mass Casualty Trailer, Eastern Star of Bowling Green, Air Evac Lifeteam and various area churches.

Sparky the Fire Dog will also be present passing out coloring books to children.

Demonstrations will take place for the Jaws of Life and other items.

The 5K run/walk will begin at the Bowling Green town square, and the finish line will be on East Washington Street on the south side of the square in front of the community building.

During the 5K, there will also be a special award given to the emergency response participant with the best finish time.

Medals and ribbons will be awarded and trophies will be given to the top overall male and female finishers for the runners and walkers.

During the 5K, there will also be a freewill donation breakfast served. Pancakes, sausage, juice and fruit will be available from 8-11:30 a.m.

The race is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Packet, pick up and registration will run from 7:30-9:15 a.m. Awards will be handed out at 11:30.

T-shirts are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Emergency responders will be given a $2 discount with presentation of identification at the registration.

In addition, RideTheWind will provide entertainment at the event.

The car/bike show will take place throughout the day. A fan favorite award will be given away.
