SULLIVAN -- A week ago, the Northview Knights played some of their best football and came up short against Terre Haute North.

On Friday night, they didn't play so well and pulled out a 27-21 Western Indiana Conference victory over the host Sullivan Golden Arrows.

Damon Hyatt took a lateral from Patrick Durcholz and returned it 75 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 56 seconds left on the clock.

"We were just hoping to get a nice return and get some field position. We had one timeout (left) with 50 seconds (to play), so if we could get some field position we were looking for a field goal at best," Northview coach George Gettle said.

Sullivan coach Trent Olson said the Arrows were trying to keep the ball way from Hyatt, who caught four passes for 104 yards and one touchdown and rushed for another 29 yards.

"We were (squib kicking) all the way," Olson said.

Durcholz picked up the loose ball and nearly threw the lateral over Hyatt's head. Hyatt leaped, pulled it in and raced down field with some excellent blocking.

The win put the Knights at 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the WIC.

"We were just fortunate to get out of here with a win. Sullivan feels like we did last week, I guarantee you. We had a hard time getting anything going momentum wise and when we did we would do something silly. Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. It wasn't a good showing, but you know what, a win's a win and we're fortunate to get out of here on the road with the win," Gettle said.

Sullivan took a 21-20 lead with 56 seconds left with a 14-play, 76-yard touchdown drive. That only difference in the game was a partially blocked PAT by Sullivan's Chance Holifield in the third quarter.

"My hat's off to coach (Trent) Olson and the Sullivan kids. They outplayed us tonight. We beat them on a trick play and a last-second kickoff return. They played their hearts out," Gettle said.

Northview opened the second half with a five-play, 65-yard touchdown drive to take a 13-7 lead. King accounted for 60 yards on one play, when to ran outside the tackle to the Sullivan 3-yard line. King threw a 6-yard touchdown to Jed Thomas.

Northview fumbled the football at its own 22-yard line and Sullivan recovered it at the Knights' 18. Fortner tied the score with a three-yard touchdown run and kicker Derek Andrew put the Golden Arrows on top 14-13 with the point-after kick.

Northview opened the fourth quarter on the drive. Miller ran for 14 yards and Hyatt pulled down a 24-yard pass from King, as the Knights reached the Sullivan 15-yard line. But on third down and nine, Sullivan's Dylan Day picked off a Northview pass at the 4-yard line.

Northview and Sullivan played to a 7-7 halftime draw, as defense dominated play. Northview had 85 yards of total offense and Sullivan 98. Each defense came up with a pass interception and a quarterback sack, but with different results.

Northview Kreig Wallen sacked Sullivan's Fortner for a seven-yard loss, but the loss was negated by a roughing the punter penalty. Two plays later Hyatt intercepted a pass, putting the Knights on offense.

Sullivan's Thomas Smith, who left the game by ambulance with an injury to his arm, sacked Northview's King on back to back plays. On third and 21, Sullivan's Jed Cox intercepted a pass and returned it 66 yards for the game's first touchdown.

Northview tied the score with 2:32 left in the first half. On third and 10, Sullivan's Cox and Caleb Turner sacked King for a 10-yard loss. But on fourth and 20, King stepped into a throw and hooked up with the leaping Patrick Durcholz for a 32-yard gain and a first down at the Sullivan 3-yard line. Vermillion capped the 11-play drive with a three-yard touchdown run.
