Juvenile dies from accidental shooting

Sunday, September 11, 2011

HARMONY -- Officials with the Clay County Sheriff's Department are investigating an accidental shooting that has taken the life of a juvenile.

According to officials, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Sunday, officials responded to a residence in Harmony following a call of an accidental shooting.

Upon arrival, deputies learned that a 16-year-old male appeared to have accidentally shot himself in the head with a semi-automatic handgun.

There were two other juvenile males and one female juvenile at the residence at the time of the shooting.

The incident is still under investigation by the Clay County Sheriff's Department and the Clay County Coroner's Office.

However, officials believe the shooting to be accidental in nature.

Also responding to the scene were the Van Buren Township Volunteer Fire Department and TransCare.

This is a very sad accident. I hope the community and all who read or hear about this accident will take a moment going forward to EDUCATE our children and other adults of the potential dangers of weapons. Kids make choices in a split second that can change their life and the people who love them. Don't let this child die in vain. EDUCATE your children- of ALL ages. Adults can help today, friends can help today! Teach someone about gun safety. Our words alone are not enough. Do you have a gun that needs to be put in another location in your home? Prevent this from ever happening again to someone you know and love.

This is so sad. Not the first time that it has happened in Clay County. When will teenagers learn that you never, never put a gun to your head and pull the trigger....My thoughts and prayers are with Christian's family.
