William 'Bill' J. Hammer

William "Bill" J. Hammer, 76, Brazil, passed away Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, following a brief illness.

Bill was born Jan. 13, 1935, in South Bend, Ind., the son of Frederick and Loretto (Williams) Hammer.

Bill served his country in the United States Navy for two years before being honorably discharged in 1956.

Bill retired from GTE after 33 years of service. He has also served on the Clay County Sheriff's Department as a Special Deputy and as a Reserve Officer for 28 years for the Brazil City Police Department. For the past 13 years, Bill served as the traffic control officer at East Side Elementary, North Clay Middle School and Northview High School.

Bill enjoyed woodworking, playing golf, watching Notre Dame football and serving others in his community.

Bill was a member of Annunciation Church, Knights of Columbus, Brazil Rotary Club, Brazil Planning Commission and had served the Clay County Chamber of Commerce as its first president.

Bill married Joan Groves April 14, 1956.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Patrick Hammer and James Hammer.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Joan Hammer, son Kevin Hammer (Lori), Davison, Mich., and daughter Karen Hammer Burk (Jim), Brazil, grandchildren Joseph Burk, Emily Hammer, Katelyn Burk, Victoria Burk and Mary Burk, brother-in-law James Groves (Frances), Huntsville, Texas, sisters-in-law Mary Jane Hammer and Patsy Hammer, both of South Bend, and Shirley Hammer, Granger, Ind., as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Visitation will be at French Funeral Home Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, from 4-7:30 p.m., with Rosary following.

Services will be at Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Brazil, Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at 10 a.m., with Fr. Mark Weaver officiating. At Bill's request, cremation will follow.
