Clay City competes with top teams at South Knox

VINCENNES -- The Clay City boys' cross country team put together a strong effort as a team in finishing eighth at the South Knox Invitational that features several of the state's strong cross country teams. The Eels girls were also on hand and placed 18th overall.

Tyler Schickel of Evansville Mater Dei was the overall winner of the boys' race in 16:06 with Greencastle's Colleen Weatherford claimed the girls' race in 19:18. Brown County won the boys' team title over South Knox with a 26-point margin. Evansville Memorial ran to the girls' team winner with 53 points to top Greencastle's score of 107.

Clay City's Jake Tiefel was the top Eel across the finish line with a time of 17:22, which was good enough for 12th overall with Ben Denker in 39th position. Parker Ames placed 43rd in 18:26, Blake Cochran was 59th in 18:52 to wrap up the Eels scoring.

The Clay City girls were topped by Phoebe Farmer in 83rd-place in a time of 25:03. Kayla Sinders was next across the finish line in 25:03, which was good for a 103rd-place finish. Behind her was teammate Ashley Sumner in 27:10 with Kiersten Mann (118th in 27:31), Michaella Hogan (121st in 27:42) and Krista Sinders (134th in 30:59).

Clay City travels to West Vigo to face the Vikings and the Northview Knights on Tuesday evening at 5 p.m.
