GREENCASTLE -- October is breast cancer awareness month.
In celebration, Putnam County Hospital's Radiology Department will award a gift basket to local women.
The Breast Imaging Technologists and Sonographers have composed a prize basket to be given to a woman that completes her first digital mammogram between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 this year at the hospital.
The American Cancer Society has established guidelines for women regarding the exam, stating that, "Women age 40-older should have a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health."
The department will also hold quarterly drawings for returning mammogram patients.
The first quarterly prize will be a Longaberger American Cancer Association basket with lid, protector, liner and other goodies.
Putnam County Hospital will also offer digital mammography within the American College of Radiology (ACR) accredited department.
In February, the hospital began offering digital mammograms, replacing the previously used film.
"Despite the economic downturn, PCH has ensured the highest level of quality mammography with the installation of digital equipment," Lead Mammographer Cindy Mason, RT (R)(M), said.
Mammograms may be scheduled at the hospital by calling 765-658-2760 Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
