Charles was born Sept. 26, 1942, to Henry and Ella Burgess.
He graduated from Gerstmeyer in 1960.
Following high school, Charles went into the Army Reserves for eight years.
He worked at Amax Chinook Coal Mine for 40 years. For part of his career, he was the president of the local union 1216.
Charles married Catherine Lynn Buckner Sept. 18, 1971.
In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Catherine Lynn Burgess, sons Michael Burgess and wife Cathy, Chuck Burgess and wife Missy, David Burgess and wife Loretta, Edward Burgess and wife Teresa, and Joseph Burgess and wife Stacey, grandchildren Michael Jacob, Joshua, David Stewart, Harley, Haylee, Leslie, Cassandra, Austin, Jacob, Shayna, Colton, Damien and Alexis, great-grandchildren Harmonie and Addison, brothers John Burgess and wife Sylvia, Jim Burgess, Frank Burgess and wife Debbie, and Rocky Burgess, sisters Mary Whitlock, and Judy McCaughy and husband Dan, as well as many extended family members.
Charles' service will be Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at 2 p.m., at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, Clay City, with Pastor Lonnie Rector officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, from 4-8 p.m., at the funeral home.
