The Northview boys' tennis team took its first step toward repeating as sectional champions on Wednesday evening by defeating South Vermillion by a 4-1 score. The win propels the Knights into the sectional championship match at 5 p.m.

Despite the win, which duplicated a regular season 4-1 win from earlier this season, coach Craig Cook believes his squad needs to bring a higher level of focus into the championship match tonight at 5 p.m.

"Well, we did what we had to do tonight. I still thought we lacked some intensity from where we need to be," Cook said. "I think the kids kind of already thought they knew what the outcome would be tonight, but tomorrow night (Thursday) is going to be a different story. I told the kids, 'Enjoy tonight, but come ready to play tomorrow night.'"

Northview got wins at both doubles spots as the No. 1 team of Dillon Reynolds and Cole Watts cruised versus the Wildcats' Kaden Lawson and Kam Weyrauch by a 6-1, 6-0 score.

"I think they played well, there again, we're just going to have to be more intense tomorrow," Cook said. "I think that has been one of the better moves we've made this year is putting them together. I think since we've put them together, that they haven't lost yet I believe. The doubles matches are going to be big tomorrow. A lot of us are sort of trying to anticipate how those doubles matches are going to go and it'll probably come down to doubles to decide the match."

The No. 2 doubles pairing of Alec Coughanowr and Devin Clark were winners against the Wildcats' duo of Erick Hire and Ben Cuengres, 6-4, 6-3.

In singles action, Bryce Britton topped South Vermillion's Connor Blake by a 6-1, 6-1 score and Garrett Baysinger was a winner at No. 3 singles by a 6-1, 6-2 count.

South Vermillion's Phillip Harpenau was a winner at No. 1 singles against the Knights' Skylar Holifield, 7-5, 6-1, and will advance in individual play.

Cook pointed his team towards the second match of the night between Owen Valley and Greencastle to get an early scouting report for the title match.

"I told the kids to go out and sit in front of the match that you are going to be playing tomorrow. Focus in on the match that you'll be playing and see what the players like and don't like and try and plan a strategy around that," Cook said.
