SULLIVAN -- The Western Indiana Conference cross country meet might just have been the latest in the coming out party stories regarding the Brown County Eagles.

The boys were a bit of old news as they placed five runners in the top-12 in claiming their fourth straight WIC team title. However, it was the girls' team this season that raised some eyebrows led by freshman Rose Guingrich, who became the first freshman to win the girls' title. Guingrich also claimed the conference record time as well, crossing the finish line in a time of 19:42 to break the mark of 19:47, which was set in 2007.

The Eagles scored just 19 points as they took the 1-3-6 and ninth spots to earn the win. West Vigo was second in the girls' race with 67 points with Northview placed third with 74 and Edgewood was fourth with 98. The boys' race was won by West Vigo's Andrew Kump, who repeated as the champion with a time of 16:12. Brown County cruised to the team win with 33 points to top West Vigo (56), Northview (72) and Edgewood (77) in the top-four.

In the boys' race, the Knights were led by sophomore Nic Yocom, who crossed the finish line in 16:32.55, barely a year after he made his season debut after a stress fracture kept him out the entire regular season. Yocom finished just two seconds behind Brown County's Alden Westcott for the second spot.

Behind Yocom for the Knights was sophomore Ian Heffner, who finished in 17:48 for 14th and classmate Travis Beil placed 17th in 17:56. Freshman Josh Johnson took 19th in 18:01 followed by senior Collin Richards in 23rd place with a time of 18:27. Senior Ryan South took 28th in 19:35, freshman Devon McCollum was 30th in 19:40.

The Northview girls were topped by freshman Emily Conrad, who placed eighth with a time of 21:41.59 with sister, Alyssa Conrad in 10th position in 21:54. A pair of juniors, were next across the finish line for the Knights as Eileen Stinnett was 19th in 23:14 and Hannah Zadeii took 20th in 23:21. Two more freshmen were next as Josie Stakeman placed 22nd in 24:19 and Allie Dupin was 25th in 25:01. Sophomore Olivia Howald was 42nd in 31:25.

The Northview cross country teams are off until sectional competition on Oct. 11 at The LaVern Gibson Course.
