SULLIVAN -- The North Clay volleyball teams have had quite a special season in 2011 and it continued over the weekend as both the seventh-grade and eighth-grade teams captured Western Indiana Conference championships and remained unbeaten this season.
The eighth-grade Knights took the court and dominated Carlisle in the opening match by a 25-3, 25-7 score and followed that up with a 25-20, 25-8 victory over Edgewood. North Clay finished up the championship by battling South Vermillion to a three-game win, 25-9, 22-25, 15-4.
Morgan Stearley led the team with a combined 17 kills in the tourney with Madison McDonald tallying 10 successful attacks. Ashley Heck and Gabby Horrall each had four kills, Alyssa Yocom added three with Bre Dove, Madison Trusty and Gracie Timberman each posting two kills. Kaylee Cooper and Alex Swaim each had one kill apiece.
Yocom had 14 assists to lead the way followed by Cooper with nine, Stearley with seven and McDonald had six for the Knights.
The defense also played well for the Knights with Alex Swaim posting six digs in a balanced effort that saw Kaytlin Galloway, Stearley and Sydney Joliff each tallying three digs. Timberman had two digs, Yocom, Cooper, Dove and Orman each had a dig.
The Knights' service game has been a strength all season and came through once more on Saturday.
Orman had 11 aces and 25 points with Dove adding 12 points and five aces. Heck tallied 10 points in the tourney with three aces with Stearley contributing 11 points and four aces. Swaim had nine points, McDonald had nine points and five aces, Galloway had seven points, Yocom had three points and Joliff had three aces.
The Knights are now 15-0 overall this season and host Cloverdale for the final home match of the season on Tuesday.
The Knights defeated Carlisle in the opener, 25-13, 25-11 and followed that with a three-game win over Edgewood, 25-10, 24-25, 15-10. In the championship match, North Clay won 25-14, 25-13.
Last week, the seventh-grade defeated Cascade on the road as Stacy Payton rang up seven aces with two kills and Kenzi Stearley had five aces in the match. Alisha Long provided two aces, Allison Herrick had three kills and on ace with Maddie Russell also posting an ace. Kerstie Shaw had three assists and a dig and both Linzy Lunsford and Quinn Albright had one kill apiece.
North Clay vs. Greencastle
On Monday evening, the North Clay volleyball teams continued their perfect seasons with wins over Greencastle on the road.
The eighth-grade posted a 25-16, 25-18 victory led by a 10-point night from Yocom at the service line. Swaim had nine aces for the Knights with Joliff adding five points, Stearley had three and Dove added two aces.
Yocom topped the team with three kills, McDonald had two and Swaim, Horrall and Orman had one kill apiece. Cooper had two assists, McDonald had one and Stearley added one assist. Galloway had two digs for the Knights.
The seventh-grade Knights took a three-game decision, 25-7, 12-25, 15-9 as Shaw had five aces, two kills and an assist. Herrick added five aces for North Clay and Lunsford had four aces and two kills in the win. Spears added three aces, Payton had two and Megan Sampson dished out two assists.
Also for North Clay, MaKenzie Stewart, Alisha Long and Indya Trahan each had a kill with Kenzi Stearley adding two digs.
The eighth-grade has now won 35 consecutive matches dating back through a 19-0 season last year as seventh-graders.
