NASHVILLE -- The North Clay cross country made the long trip back from Brown County a celebratory one as the Knights came home with a pair of Western Indiana Conference team championships and an individual title by Cam Trout.

The girls' race wasn't without some dramatics at the finish line as the team title came down to a tie-breaker as North Clay was tied with Edgewood with a total of 38 points after five runners. However, the Knights won the title based on its sixth runner, Cheyenne Mullenix, who finished ahead of the Colts' sixth runner to give North Clay the victory.

Brown County was a distant third with 69 points as Sullivan and South Vermillion finished in the fourth and fifth spots. Owen Valley did not field a complete team.

That the race even came down a tie-breaker was nearly moot without the extra effort from Sonja Nelson, who passed the Colts' fifth runner with 30 yards left in the race to set up the tie-break.

The boys' race wasn't quite as close, but Trout's winning time of 11:00 led North Clay to a six-point win over Brown County, 35 to 41. Edgewood was third, South Vermillion was fourth followed by Sullivan. Owen Valley also did not field a full boys' team.

North Clay placed three runners on the all-conference list for the boys' event as Christian Herron was seventh (12:03) and Gaidj Evans placed ninth in 12:14 as the top-10 were all-WIC finishers. Taelur Evans narrowly missed the honor with an 11th-place in 12:18, Tyler McNabb was 12th in 12:19 followed by Dawson Nelson in 13th (12:24) and Tanner Batchelor in 25th (13:45).

North Clay's girls also had three on the all-WIC list led by Kourtney Johnson in third-place with a time of 13:12 followed by Izzy Shumaker in eighth (13:49) and Macenzie Allen took 10th in 13:53. Chelsey Hines placed 11th in 13:54 as Cassidy Gardner placed 13th in 14:12. Mullenix was 14th (14:30) and Nelson crossed the line in 22nd (15:19).

In the open race on Saturday, North Clay's Ryan Young dominated for a 46-second win. Other runners included: Zade Reberger, Matt Fordice, Jalen Satterfield, Julia Smith, Caitlin Fairbanks and Livi Spunardi.
