NASHVILLE -- Three Clay County cross country teams competed on the scenic Brown County Regional course at Eagle Park on Saturday, however, they were unable to secure a return trip for Saturday's semi-state on the same course.

The finishes in both the boys' and girls' races provided plenty of drama with mixed results for area runners.

In the girls' race, Terre Haute North's Chanli Mundy edged Bloomington North's Kate Raphael in a photo finish. Mundy leaned across the finish line to earn the victory by a scant 0.28 seconds with a time of 18:41.62. Mundy's finish helped her Patriot team to the team title with 38 points to win over Bloomington South, Terre Haute South, Martinsville and Bloomington North.

The victor in the boys' race was Carl Smith of Bloomington South, who won by a comfortable nine seconds over teammate Mark Chandler in 15:37. However, the drama came at the line for Northview sophomore Nic Yocom, who was chased down by Edgewood's Michael Mest for the 15th and final individual qualifying spot for the semi-state. Mest edged out Yocom by 0.63 seconds in 16:39.36.

As a team, the Knights finished ninth, one spot ahead of Clay City.

"We've had two bad meets here," Northview boys' coach Chad Smith said. "We didn't run bad. Two years ago we finished sixth as a team, which missed semi-state by one and Nic (Yocom) today finished 16th. The two worst spots you can be in over the last couple of years. Nic ran really well. He ran a PR for him on a windy cold day. You couldn't ask any more. It was just a split second where he got caught. So the season ends a little short, but I think Nic ran as well as he could though."

The Northview girls placed 10th and were led by senior Alyssa Conrad, who placed 41st in 21:57.

The fall foliage was on full display in crisp, cool weather at Eagle Park in Nashville as the boys' race began on Saturday morning. As expected, Bloomington South's third-ranked team was well represented in the lead packs as Smith and Chandler were up front along with Terre Haute South's Jackson Bertoli, the Patriots' Tyeson Mundy and West Vigo's Andrew Kump. That lead pack stayed close over much of the race before Smith made his move around the 4K mark and pulled away to win. Bertoli stayed in touch with Chandler until the end and placed third by six seconds over Mundy.

The Panthers cruised to the team title with 37 points as Terre Haute South took second ahead of Bloomington North, Terre Haute North and Martinsville.

The Knights were led by Yocom's 16th-place finish and Clay City senior Jake Tiefel was the next Clay County runner across the line with a 25th-place finish in 17:06.

"He was going to stay with those other guys and try to hang as long as he could and try to advance, but unfortunately it didn't happen," Clay City coach Darby Sinders said of Tiefel. "He didn't come out until last year, it was kind of a short learning curve for him anyway. The (seniors) have done well. Ben (Denker) has been a four-year guy. They've all ran hard and been good leaders this year."

Denker placed 54th in 18:22 as freshman Parker Ames was 40th in 17:54. Blake Cochran was 62nd, Wayne Tharp placed 64th, Paiden Myers was 68th in 19:34 and Michael Brooks was 71st.

"I thought Paiden Meyers ran his best race of the year," Sinders said. "Jake (Tiefel) had a good race, we were hoping for a little better, but he went out strong. We were happy with what he did today. The other guys ran strong."

Northview's second runner was freshman Travis Beil in 41st with a time of 17:54 followed by classmate Josh Johnson in 49th at 18:10. Sophomore Ian Heffner was 55th in 18:26, Collin Richards was 66th in 19:28 and Devon McCollum was 69th in 19:40.

"We had some people who really stepped up," Smith said. "Travis Beil finished second for us. We have Collin (Richards) who is a little bit injured for us. It's a shame, he's been hurting for us the last couple of meets with shin splints. He fell back for us with that injury. Other than that I thought we ran really well."
