Board accepts 2012 budget

Thursday, October 20, 2011

After some discussion on changing plans, the Brazil Parks and Recreation Board unanimously passed its budget for 2012.

During its monthly meeting Monday, the board discussed ways to cut more money from its initial budget proposal to the City of Brazil.

Board member Linda Messmer said initially, after calculating the numbers, she came up with a budget of $256,000.

However, city officials explained to Messmer the budget could be no more than the 2011 total of $228,000, meaning park board members would have to go back to the drawing board.

As a result, Messmer sifted through the totals and cut $12,000 on her own, leaving $16,000 to cut.

After a special meeting where board members discussed the budget, it was voted on Monday to eliminate one full-time position and make it a part-time position, effectively cutting the amount to $228,447.

It was discussed Monday that the board cut into the annual income of the Brazil Concert Band.

A motion was made to reduce the income by $500, but did not pass.

The 2012 proposed budget was then unanimously accepted and will be given to the Brazil City Clerk-Treasurer as soon as possible.

The board meets regularly on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m., at Brazil City Hall. However, the board has not set a meeting date for November as of yet due to Municipal Elections taking place Nov. 8.
