She had been a resident of Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility for the past five years.
Sophia was born in Terre Haute, Sept. 6, 1918, the daughter of Cecil and Mae Tate Mitchell.
Sophia was married to Joseph M. Carpenter and together, they lived and raised their son in Brazil.
During the years that Joe served as Clay County Auditor, Sophia worked in the courthouse office.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She enjoyed traveling with her family, reading, spending time with friends and her special "four-legged" friend, "Sandy."
Survivors include her son Kenneth Carpenter and fiance, Jackie Cail, Evanston, Ind., grandchildren Kenny Carpenter and fiance, Bobbi Jo Gillespie, Evansville, Kurt Carpenter and wife Cindy, Jasper, and Kathryn Counsell and husband Judd, Brooklyn, N.Y., great-grandchildren Joseph Carpenter, Kaylin Carpenter, Kyla Carpenter, Brandon Carpenter, Sara Carpenter, Oscar Counsell and Walt Counsell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe Carpenter, and sister Marie Foster.
Services will take place Monday, at 1 p.m., at French Funeral Home, with Pastor David Mallinack officiating.
Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery.
Visitation will take place Monday, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
