An 18-year-old Brazil woman was transported via Air Evac Lifeteam to Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, following an accident Monday morning.

At approximately 9:06 a.m., officials were dispatched to the intersection of United States 40 and County Road 225 W.

According to Indiana State Police officials, the victim, Caytlin C. Phillips 18, Brazil, was driving southbound on CR 225 W., in a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am when she pulled out onto United States 40 in front of a black 1988 GMC truck driven by Howard R. Hughes, 62, Brazil, who was traveling westbound.

ISP officials stated Phillips drove into the path of Hughes and was hit broadside.

Phillips had to be extricated from her vehicle using the Jaws of Life.

Reports stated Phillips sustained injuries to her chest.

"She was very responsive," ISP Trooper Chip McKee said. "She knew her name."

Traffic was stalled in both east and westbound lanes of U.S. 40 until approximately 9:45 a.m.

Phillips' condition was not known at press time.

Other agencies responding to the accident included TransCare, the Brazil City Police Department and the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department.
