Robert E. Carpenter, 87, Battle Creek, Mich., died Thursday evening, Nov. 3, 2011, after a brief illness.
He was born in Brazil Jan. 6, 1924, to Marion D. and Jessie (Decker) Carpenter.
Robert graduated from Indiana State Teacher's College and received his Master's degree from Indiana University.
Throughout the years, he completed further graduate work at various institutions, including Northern Michigan University, MSU, Case Institute, Rensselaer, American University Washington, D.C., Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and Louisiana State University.
Robert taught science in Indiana schools in Bedford, Bloomington, and Richmond, before joining the faculty of Kellogg Community College in 1960.
He served as chairman of the science and math departments for eight years before his retirement in 1980. He had taught for 34 years.
Robert was active in the School Science and Mathematics Association and National Science Teachers Association.
Since his retirement, he had worked with the Michigan Science Olympiad program, the Battle Creek tax board of review, the UAC exhibits and Kingman Museum, Inc.
On May 29, 1948, he married Zoe M. Shriner in Terre Haute. She survives.
He is also survived by his son James R. Carpenter, Lander, Wyo., his daughter Alice C. Ferguson, Battle Creek, Mich., granddaughter Crystal A. Ferguson, and great-granddaughter Madison E. Boone.
At the request of the family, cremation has taken place and no services are being planned.
