WEST TERRE HAUTE -- Make "Christmas at the Woods" the musical inspiration for the holidays.
The Sinfonietta Pops Orchestra concert will be performed in the Cecilian Auditorium at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College Saturday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m.
Refreshments at intermission will be provided by the Board of Directors of the Terre Haute Community Band, Inc. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Children under 10 will be admitted free.
Jessie Uchytil, a music student at SMWC, will perform the clarinet solos in the concert opener, "In the Bleak Midwinter."
The Christmas carol is based on a poem by the English poet Christian Rossetti in 1872. It was published posthumously in Rossetti's "Poetic Works," in 1904 and became a Christmas carol after it was set to music by Gustaf Holst and appeared in The English Hymnal in 1906.
"Fantasia on Greensleeves" will feature flute players Richard and Barbara Cooper, both of whom have played first and second flute for the orchestra a number of years.
Barbara joined the orchestra in 1991, while Richard joined in 1993.
The "Toy Symphony" is a music work with parts for toy instruments and is popularly played at Christmas. The piece calls on all the toys in the percussionists' bag of tricks.
"Santa at the Symphony" is a creative arrangement which combines elements of classical and romantic orchestral literature with 20th century pop Christmas songs.
Other songs performed will include "Winter Wonderland," "Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!," and "Silent Night."
