Harmony Happenings

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Harmony United Methodist Church will be making up eight food baskets for needy families. David and Cheryl Brinson are overseeing the project. Donations are due at the church this week. Church groups coordinated their efforts to try to include as many families while not duplicating the service. In the past, more than one church might have given to the same family while another needy family was missed. The coordination should spread the assistance and make it as fair as possible. God bless those in need and God bless the helper.

Toys for Tots had a meeting at the church on Monday evening to get organized for theirbig event. People can donate toys or make monetary donations for the kids. At the appointed time and date, needy children can come to pick out items from their wish lists.

The Advent Conspiracy Book Study began this Wednesday night. Folks are still welcome to attend. It will continue Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m.

The Mission Team meets tonight at 6:30 p.m., before the Administrative Meeting at 7.

Pastor Terry Jeffers reported he received a grant for four new tires. Apparently, there was a program to help pastors get around to all of their meetings and visits. With 60,000 miles on his tires, he was very appreciative.

United Methodist Men will meet at Bethel UMC for Breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 8 a.m. All men are invited to attend. The Charge Conference will be at Bethel too. It will be at 4 p.m., on Sunday.

Harmony United Methodist Women will not meet this month. We will have a Christmas Party at the church on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 6:30 p.m. Mark your calendars. All ladies of the church are invited to attend. We will have a pitch-in dinner and a friendly gift exchange. Ladies are asked to bring a small gift, around $5. It can be purchased, homemade, or hand crafted. I will be getting out invitations and a sign-up sheet as soon as I get caught up. As always, women, from other churches that don't have UMW's, are invited to join us.

Cousin Debbie Akers came for a visit on Friday and helped me to repair an old wardrobe that I needed for art supplies. We put our ideas together and came up with a plan. We were so proud when it actually worked. No one can even see the repairs unless they turn the wardrobe upside down.

I fixed some shrimp scampi and salad for lunch that day. I had bought a Texas Sheet Cake at the Fish Fry and froze it. I topped a couple pieces with squirty whipped cream and shaved a dark chocolate bar around it. Martha Stewart would have been proud. Thanks to Carole Weaver for baking the delicious sheet cake for the fish fry.

I don't know if anyone noticed but we had very comfy folding chairs for the fish fry at HUMC. Apparently a trucker abandoned them after a spill along the highway. They were offered to HUMC if we would pick them up. Thanks to the church folks that went out to I-70 to collect them.

Good neighbor Patty Escott was in California for a few days of vacation. It is nice to see her back and puttering around across the road. Patty is always busy. She has her pretty white Christmas tree set up on the front porch. It always looks so gorgeous during the holiday season.

All the neighbors have had pretty fall decorations except me. My bum knee is making it difficult to do anything outside. My decorations may be just a memory this year. Hopefully, the doctors will come up with a solution to my knee problems. Surgery did not help much.

Rosanne Aker mentioned that she is looking for bell ringers for the Salvation Army. This is a good community project for Scouts, clubs, or church groups. I haven't had a chance to talk to her since her meeting. Call her if you are willing to help.
