Letter to the Editor

Open letter from Lybarger family

Sunday, November 20, 2011

To the Editor:

Our parents, Herschel and Marjory Lybarger, died in 1989 as a result of an accident caused by a drunk driver.

Nearly every year since that time we have held a memorial service at the site of their accident in Brazil.

By honoring the memory of our parents, we hope we have helped to educate the public regarding the risks of drinking and driving.

It is our decision that the time has come to discontinue these annual memorial services.

We want to express our gratitude to Marilyn Peffley who, as chair of the Vigo and Clay County MADD Chapters, was so instrumental in these memorial services.

Many of you know that Marilyn passed away in 2009.

We also want to thank the local officials and law enforcement personnel who have always made time to attend the memorial services.

Their support in helping to highlight the problem of drinking and driving is much appreciated.

We are also grateful for the news coverage that we have received.

The local newspapers, television stations and radio stations have the ability to help spread this message to many people.

Hopefully, some have listened.

As a final request, we ask that as each future holiday season rolls around, you will take a few minutes to consider the risks of drinking and driving.

Please help your loved ones remain safe.

With our thanks,

Bob and Jerry Lybarger,

Sons of Herschel and Marjory Lybarger
