Advent services to begin

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

The Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods have announced a schedule of Advent services as a prelude to the Christmas season.

Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and is a time of preparation to celebrate the anniversary of the incarnate God of love coming into the world, as well as at the end of time. Traditionally, the season is marked with an advent wreath and special music and prayers.

All liturgies and prayer services are open to the public and to people of all faith traditions.

Eucharistic Liturgies on the four Sundays of Advent, which are Nov. 27, Dec. 4,

Dec. 11 and Dec. 18, are at 11 a.m., in the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

The Blessing of the Advent Wreath will take place during the liturgy on Nov. 27, the first Sunday of Advent.

Advent Vespers are scheduled on Nov. 27, Dec. 11, and Dec. 18, in the Church from 4:30-5 p.m. There will be no Vespers on Dec. 4, in order that all may attend the Christmas Concert sponsored by St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in the Church.

Vespers is the evening prayer of the Church. The sisters will gather at this time and invite others to join them in praising God for the blessings of the day and asking God for assistance during the coming night.

It is an opportunity to pray the psalms in song in an ecumenical spirit and to reflect on the Advent season's scripture readings.

Sunday Brunch and The Gift Shop at Providence Center are closed on Nov. 27, but they will be open Dec. 4, Dec. 11 and Dec. 18. Brunch hours are 10:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. The Gift Shop is open between 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
