Youth injured during parade

Monday, November 28, 2011

An 11-year-old male was struck by a trailer/float during the Christmas In The Park Parade Friday.

According to officials with the Brazil City Police Department, at approximately 7:20 p.m., the boy was allegedly struck by the float at the 300 block of East National Avenue during the parade.

Officials stated the boy was walking in the parade handing out flyers. He allegedly approached the trailer/float on the passenger side, near the wheels to collect more flyers.

However, the boy's leg made contact with the rear tire and was pulled to the ground and the tire rolled over his leg.

The boy was attended to by various emergency response personnel, including TransCare and Clay County Search and Rescue, and was later transported to St. Vincent Clay Hospital via TransCare, where he was treated and later released.

Glad he is ok! We attended the parade with three other families and really enjoyed it. People really put a lot of effort into the whole thing - and it shows. It's such a nice event to have in the community.

I'm glad he is okay. The floats were moving so quickly this year. Something needs to be done about the speed of the floats.

So glad he is ok. We knew something happened but didn't know what, so we started praying immediately. I've always worried about kids as they are going back up towards the floats for more flyers or more candy. Hopefully this will make people think about safer ways of doing things in the future. However I do have to say that this year's parade was the best I've ever seen! Amazing job everyone!

I'm slightly disappointed by the lack of facts in this article. Sadly, he was not struck, nor was he walking. My family and I were watching and unfortunately saw the whole thing. He fell off the back and landed on his knee. We thought for sure he was going to have a cracked knee cap the way he landed. But, the Brazil Times has missed the mark on this one.

The story published by the Brazil Times is correct. It was my son that was injured. He was NOT riding on the float, he was handing out candy and went back to get more from the float and was struck by the tire. The tire ran over his foot and did nothing to his knee. He is doing fine now. Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes!
