Officials with the Clay County Sheriff's Department want residents to be aware of a possible new phone scam filtering through the area.
Recently, Sheriff Mike Heaton said the department received a call from a local resident regarding the possible scam.
Heaton said the man received a phone call from a woman claiming to be with an organization based in Indianapolis.
The organization solicited funds from citizens for children whose parents were incarcerated in order to purchase Christmas presents.
The woman told the man she had received a contact list of inmates at the Clay County Justice Center.
"We are not aware of anything nor has anyone called us to get a list of people," Heaton said.
Heaton added when the man asked the woman for a number to call back, she immediately said she would call him at a later date.
Heaton said the woman's number came up as a restricted number and she had told the man she would not give a call back number.
"This is the first time we've heard of this," Heaton said. "Everyone this time of year has a soft spot in their heart for children.
"Right now, we're still researching to see if we can find out if this is a legitimate organization. I just want people to use caution."
