Man sustains injuries from rifle mishap

Friday, December 9, 2011

Darren Collenbaugh, 20, Coal City, was injured while hunting deer near Coal City Friday, Dec. 9, at approximately 11 a.m.

Collenbaugh received serious injuries to his hand and stomach, when his muzzleloader rifle allegedly misfired. He was taken by TransCare Ambulance service to Greene County Hospital, Linton, where he was flown by Air Evac to St. Mary's Hospital, Evansville.

Collenbaugh had been hunting deer with his cousin Jacob Collenbaugh, 22, and Justin Brezina, 21, both of Poland.

The two men were moving toward Collenbaugh's location, and both could see him when they heard the shot.

The incident occurred in a wooded area north of 13060 S. County Line Road and CR 300 East, Coal City.

Indiana Conservation Officers Dale Clark and Jason Sullivan are investigating the cause of the incident. The firearm has been collected to possibly determine any contributing factors to the misfire.
