Northview's junior varsity basketball teams earned a pair of Western Indiana Conference victories at home Thursday night against the Edgewood Mustangs.

The boys' came away with a 36-28 decision with the girls' squad shutting the Mustangs out in the first quarter of a 26-21 victory.

Defense played a big role in the Northview girls' gaining an 8-0 lead after one quarter of play as the Knights held Edgewood without a fieldgoal until just 1:27 remained in the first half of play. Brittany Fagg got off to a strong start with six of her 10 points in the opening period before she picked up her second foul and went to the bench.

Natasha Barrett picked up the slack in the second quarter with four points and two boards to keep the Knights out front by a 12-3 lead at the break.

The Mustangs made a run in the third quarter as freshman Hannah Pitcher nailed a 3-pointer and junior Taylor Mullins added another trifecta to narrow the gap to 12-9 late in the period. The Knights were able to finish the period strong as Sydney Buell scored off an offensive rebound and Fagg contributed a jumper to push the gap to 16-9 heading to the final quarter.

After both offenses struggled to gain a rhythm over the first three stanzas, the teams finished strong.

Barrett scored off another offensive rebound and put back followed by a jumper from Grace Sutherland at the elbow that gave the Knights a 20-11 advantage. The Mustangs countered with a score by Kelsey Young following a timeout, but the Knights' Tidy Weese responded with a baseline jumper for her only points.

Edgewood wasn't going to go away however as Mullins hit a bucket and then took the ball coast-to-coast for another score as the Mustangs crept within 22-17 with two minutes remaining.

Fagg hit a pair of free throws as part of a 10-point game and a steal by Weese led to a lay-in by Buell to put the game out of reach in the closing minute.

In the boy's game, the Knights trailed early on as Edgewood's 6'3 Darren Fuller contributed three early points and a pair of rebounds to put his team up 8-7 after one quarter. Daniel Kimball had four points and four rebounds in the first six minutes before his second foul sent him to the bench.

The second quarter proved more fruitful for the Knights as Joe Ball drained his second 3-pointer, Ian Heffner added a bucket and Nate Newton hit all four of his shots from the free throw line to open a 16-10 lead at the midway point.

The lead grew to 19-12 after Newton hit a one-hander in the lane and Ball added a 3-pointer out of a third quarter timeout for a 22-14 advantage heading to the final quarter.

In the final period it was Edgewood that made a run to get within 27-22 following a pair of turnovers by the Knights led to a score by Zack Harrison and Michael Bowman. The Mustangs missed a chance to get closer, missing a pair of point blank chances with two minutes remaining.

The Knights were big from the free throw line down the stretch as Ball hit three, Tyler Rector added two of his own and both Kimball and Jim Mace completed the win with two charity tosses to close out the victory.

The Knights hit 9-of-12 from the line in the fourth quarter to claim the win.

Ball led the way with 12 points with Kimball and Newton adding six apiece.

The girls improve to 2-5 overall and the boys are now 5-1.
