For several years, members of Serving On The Streets (S.O.S.) have given back to children in the community through its Hands and Feet sponsored program.
Community sponsors pay approximately $25 per month to help fund S.O.S., with part of the money going to purchase shoes and more for children in need.
"The program has existed at least six years," S.O.S. Assistant Director Heather Hopkins told The Brazil Times. "This is the third year for the shoes."
Hopkins spent the better part of her Thursday morning sorting through gift bags, which were scheduled to be delivered to children later in the day.
She said volunteers within the organization had been delivering goodies practically all week.
Hopkins said approximately 130 children are sponsored by community members through the program. However, she added there are 200-250 children that take part in various S.O.S. functions.
In addition to the Hands and Feet program, S.O.S. also provided goodies for children in the Kids Club. Hopkins said children taking part in that program received a pair of shoes Saturday, Dec. 17, as well as a toy during the S.O.S. Christmas Party.
S.O.S. was founded by Jenni Chamberlain as a way to help children in need within the community.
