Lakers steamroll listless Knights in PHWVC opener

TERRE HAUTE -- The Northview Knights aren't likely to reflect fondly on their opening contest in the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic Tourney on Tuesday night. They couldn't buy a lay-up with Donald Trump's bankroll and Shakamak's duo of Justin Crody and Brodie Crowe had few of the same problems.

The result was a rather lopsided 57-32 victory for the Lakers that was every bit as dominant an effort as the score would indicate.

Shakamak outscored the Knights 30-10 over a stretch from the middle of the third quarter to the end of the game and outrebounded Northview 38-18 overall.

The Knights were within 27-22 in the second period after a 3-pointer by junior Dallas King, but Shakamak took control from that point on.

While Northview couldn't seem to get any of its shots in the paint to go down as evidenced by the team's 13-of-45 (29-percent) shooting for the game, the Lakers were heating up.

Crody, a 6'7 senior post player, started the finishing run with a three-point play in the post and after the Knights got a score from Damon Hyatt on a nifty duck under move, Crowe nailed a 3-pointer. The junior guard would end up hitting all three of his shots from outside the arc during the quarter and the Lakers ended the third period on a 12-4 run led by nine points from Crowe and five from Crody.

The Lakers duo would combine for 41 of Shakamak's 57 points overall, 24 of those points coming after halftime.

The Knights fell behind 39-26 heading into the final quarter after hitting just 4-of-10 from the field in the third stanza.

Things would get even worse in the final period.

With the Lakers already ahead double-digits, Crowe answered a Hyatt drive with a baseline bucket and Patrick Green scored for a 43-28 Lakers' lead. Crody added two free throws and Crowe drilled his fifth 3-pointer of the game to push the gap out to 48-28.

With Northview's starting five shooting just 7-of-24 (29-percent), coach Ernie Maesch substituted liberally over the final few minutes.

Shakamak continued to extend its lead by pounding the boards. Brody had 13 rebounds for Shakamak and Crowe added another eight in the win.

The Knights got a pair of buckets from Jim Mace down the stretch.

Hyatt led Northview with 10 points, no other player had more than four as the Knights dropped to 2-5 overall and face South Vermillion today in a consolation bracket game at 5:30 p.m.
