ELNORA -- The Clay City boys' basketball team opened its holiday tourney play by splitting its first two games of the Graber Post Classic Tourney held at North Daviess High School Wednesday through Friday

Barr-Reeve handed the Eels their first loss of the season as the Class A No. 5 Vikings edged Clay City 58-47. The Eels bounced back in the second round of the tourney to defeat North Posey and played Friday night for fifth-place

The first night of competition showcased a pair of streaking teams as Barr-Reeve brought a six-game winning streak into the tourney after losing its opener against defending state champion Washington. However, the Vikings had followed that up with by six straight wins by at least 17 points.

On Wednesday night, Clay City played well for much of the game, leading 39-38 through three quarters before the Vikings rallied back from beyond the arc as Ashton Wagler drilled three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to lead his team to victory.

Clay City got 17 points and a pair of 3-pointer from junior Blake Cesinger with Brylan Jones adding 12 and Jake Tiefel contributing 10. Ben Denker added eight points for Clay City. Ashton and Addison Wagler combined for 32 points for the Vikings.

Despite a disappointing loss in the tourney opener, Clay City got rolling quickly against North Posey in the second game.

The Eels built a 10-point lead in the first half of action before North Posey cut the lead to four early in the third period.

Clay City got untracked late in the third quarter and stretched its lead back to double-figures and held off North Posey on a combined 15 fourth quarter points from Tiefel and Denker for a 68-62 victory.

"The guys really came back strong today after suffering their first loss of the season against a very good Barr-Reeve team yesterday to beat a good team tonight," Clay City coach Vance Edmondson said. "Our bench guys that came in today did a great job of doing what we needed them to do. Colten Harbour gave us some great minutes tonight as did the rest of the bench."

Harbour had eight points off the bench for Clay City as Jones led the way with a 17-point night. Tiefel added 14, Denker had 12 and Cesinger contributed 11. Tyler Allen scored five for the Eels in the victory.
