Harmony Happenings

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

Pastor Terry Jeffers will have revised office hours at Harmony United Methodist Church. He adjusts his times with his class schedule. He plans to be at the church on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Of course, illnesses, church member needs, or emergencies can change the plans.

HUM Women will meet on Monday, Jan. 23, in Fellowship Hall at HUMC. Pastor Terry Jeffers will be in charge of the lesson and his wife Becky will be the hostess.

We need to decide about a possible fundraiser. A Chili Cookoff has been suggested for February.

Our Sunday School Class is starting a new Bible Study that starts with Genesis and goes through the entire Bible. It will take months, of course.

We have study guides ordered to help us. Mike and Nancy Mace were familiar with this program from their previous church and suggested it.

Most of us have spent much more time studying the New Testament. This will provide an opportunity to study the whole Book. We will begin next Sunday. Join us.

It has been pretty busy around my house over the last couple of weeks. Mike and Karen had us over on Christmas Eve.

Then friends and family came over to my house on New Year's Eve to watch in 2012. It was good to see some old school friends from Jackson Township and Van Buren days.

Niece Erin Roach-Taylor arrived from Florida on the 4th. She is visiting until the 14th.

The Roaches met at Mario's on her first evening home. Her husband Joey stayed at home to work but we are sending him love and presents, too.

We had Roach Christmas here on Sunday and will be having movie night sometime before Erin goes back to Disney World.

As always, Erin made Uncle Mike work for his present. She handed him a small package tied up with pretty paper and ribbon.

Sometimes his present has been inside a block of concrete or superglued or incased in packages of tape.

It looked so innocent this year. He unwrapped a tiny tool box replica. Inside was a tinier scroll.

On the scroll, Erin had borrowed from an old Christmas Classic.

It said "Click, click, click, Down through the chimney with Old St. Nick ..." Of course, it told him, "Up on the Rooftop, Click, click, click."

At first he searched my decorative birdhouses, hoping he would not have to search outside in the dark. No luck! Niecie pointed him toward the door. The present was indeed on the roof. Papa John had helped with the conspiracy.

Uncle Mike was able to get the sparkling silver package and opened it. It was packed in bubble wrap to protect the contents and a flying trip to the roof.

His efforts were appreciated but there was a mistake the note read ... he had retrieved Aunt Gail's present.

Thoroughly frustrated, he found his present was across the room in the wastebasket.

Uncle unwrapped his real gift, a toy vehicle from the new Cars movie. It is the car that is supposed to be a secret agent but I only know the name of Mater from the first movie.

I put on my knife, fork, and spoon earrings that had sprung from the roof.

That is another standing joke in our family. Brother John maintains that the Roach Coat-of-Arms would have to include some silverware and he always adds that to the official design.

Some knife, fork, or spoon always seems to show up at gift time. Of course, we had our gift exchange, but the little competition between Erin and Mikey is often the highlight.

We had turkey and all the trimmings on Sunday so movie night will be tacos and popcorn -- easy fixins'.

Erin had some DVD's and Blue thingies on her Christmas list. We will watch them with her. It is so good that she could get some days off for a nice long visit. Erin and her mom have been marathon shopping, too.

I never seem to find bargains at the mall but they do. They have the gift for finding a truck load of stuff for a quarter.

Maybe the fact that I hate shopping puts a curse on my buying skills. Catalogs are my friend. Gift cards are nice, too.

The Dawson family is expecting twins. I finally asked Grandma Rita Jones if it would be okay to mention their names. She said they are all so excited and telling everyone.

Big brother Harper is probably excited, too. Much congratulations to Nikki and her husband.

Happy Belated Birthday to Barbara Stanfield & Clayton Akers.
