She was born in Cory on July 3, 1924, to Harley W. and Edith A. Modesitt Stewart. She graduated from Cory High School, class of 1942. On Aug. 9, 1942, she was united in marriage to Earl "Pete" Slater.
She worked at various public jobs in her life; the thing she labored the most hours at was rearing eleven children. Even with her large family, she never refused to hang wallpaper for others. She loved to hang paper and was quite good at doing this job. She loved to cook, especially recipes with unusual ingredients.
She crocheted, played cards, Yahtzee and Bingo. She was also an avid reader. She will long be remembered for her delicious yeast rolls and her boundless energy. She was a caring and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, infant daughters Anita and Sheila, granddaughter Lacey Slater, and great-granddaughter Faith Plessinger, sisters Joy Murphy and Estel Mae Whitlock, brothers Roy, Eldon, and Dale Stewart and a dear friend Ben Romas.
Survivors include her children Kenneth (Peggy) Slater, Cory, Barbara (John) Plessinger, Fountaintown, Ind., Karen (Charles) Weatherman, Excelsior Springs, Mo., Robert Slater, Paoli, Ind., Paul (Jackie) Slater, Terre Haute, James Slater, Ocala, Fla., Steven Slater, Bowling Green, Ind., Mary (Randy) Scherer, Brazil, David (Sonja) Slater, Radcliff, Ky., Dennis (Kim) Slater, Brazil and Rona (Jeff) Denny, Brazil, grandchildren Paula Slater Bratcher (Kevin), Kenneth Slater, Jr. (Patty), Julie Plessinger Ruff (Brian), Amy Plessinger Howard, Brad Plessinger (Lyndsey), Monte Porter (Stacie), Kevin Porter (Tasha), Aaron Slater (Mandy), Drew Slater, Jamie Slater (Amanda), Stevie Slater, Dr. Andrea Scherer and fiancÚ Joey Chang, David Scherer (Amber), Chelsie Slater (Kyle McBroom), Sabrina Slater, Megan Slater, Morgan Patterson, Wyatt Patterson, Josie Denny, great-grandchildren Krystal Bratcher, Molly Slater, Logan Menser, Madelyn and Olivia Ruff, Garret, Griffin, and Gavin Howard, Samantha, Brayden and Alston Plessinger, Kaitlyn and Kara Porter, Chris and Jenna Porter, Gage Slater, triplets-Hayden, Hank and Hannah Slater, Caiden Slater, Riley McBroom, Kellan and Kayla Bohannon, Kadden Slater, and Emma Scherer, arriving in February, sisters Norma Jane Miller, Bowling Green and brother Donald W. Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m., at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Wetnight officiating. Burial will follow at Cory Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 p.m., and Saturday prior to the services. Light a candle at www.schoppenhorstfuneralhome.com.
