Residents file for candidacy

Friday, January 13, 2012

At all levels, the 2012 election is here.

On Friday, Clay County Election Office Deputy Clerk Jason Jacobs told The Brazil Times five residents have already officially filed for candidacy.

According to Jacobs, Vickie Wheeler has filed for Clerk of Circuit Court, as well as Charlie Brown (Clay County Commissioners, District 2), Jack Withers (Clay County Commissioners, District 1), Joe Dierdorf (Clay County Recorder), and Mike McCullough (Clay County Council, At-Large).

Candidates have until noon, Friday, Feb. 10, to file candidacy. In addition, candidates have until noon, Monday, Feb. 13, to withdraw their names.

Individuals were allowed to file beginning Wednesday.

Jacobs said he expects to see more people file just before the deadline.

"Usually, it picks up toward the end," Jacobs said. "Usually, that last week is when there are typically more people filing."

Those wishing to run for county office must register at the Clay County Election Office, located on the second floor of the Clay County Courthouse. The office is open Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-noon, and 1-4 p.m.

Other county offices up for election this year include Clay County Superior Court Judge (six-year term), Clay County Circuit Court Judge (six-year term), surveyor, coroner, Clay County Council (At-Large, three positions), Clay Community School Board (districts 1, 2, 3 and 4), as well as convention delegates (nine each for Republican and Democrat) and precinct committeemen (23, Republican only).

The May 8 Primary Election will also feature individuals hoping to become the Democratic or Republican party candidates in November at the federal level, including President of the United States, United States Representative District 8 and United States Senator, as well as state level positions of governor, attorney general, superintendent of public instruction, State Representative District 42, State Representative District 44 and State Representative District 46.

Jacobs said new filings -- at the local level -- will be posted on the Clay County website each Friday afternoon until the end of the candidate filing period. Those wishing to see the filings may access them at http://www.claycountyin.gov/index.pl?id=....
