SULLIVAN -- The Northview wrestling team headed into the home stretch of the wrestling season on Saturday morning by taking home a 4-1 overall mark at the Sullivan Winter Duals.

The Knights came away with victories over Robinson, Ill., Lawrenceville, Ill., Gibson Southern and Evansville Harrison, but came up just short in a conference preview battle against the host Golden Arrows squad.

"We were real close to our goal," coach Dan Mikesell said. "We wanted to go 5-0, we went 4-1 and lost a tough one to Sullivan. We actually split matches seven and seven, but (Sullivan) got some bonus points that we didn't and that cost us. It gave us a winning season, which was one of our goals and that's a pretty good accomplishment for a group that's as young as this one is."

Northview also brought home some hardware in the form of four unbeaten wrestlers as Aaron See, Jesse Miller, Caleb Nicosin and Justin Sampson all were 5-0 on the afternoon. Mikesell was pleased with some of his team's individual performances on the way to the four victories.

"I think they wrestled pretty well. Justin Sampson, that's the first time he's gone undefeated. That was nice for him. He put together some nice wins," Mikesell said. "Caleb Nicosin actually bumped up to 113 for one match and won that as well. He wrestled very solid and wrestled well on top. Jesse Miller put together a good day. That's two weeks in a row that he went 5-0. He's on a good roll and Aaron's doing pretty well too."

The Knights got a look at what will likely be one of its fiercest competitors in defending the Western Indiana Conference title that they won last season. The Golden Arrows went unbeaten on the day and, not surprisingly, the action was heated when the WIC foes met in the second-to-last dual match of the day.

Sullivan held an early advantage with Hunter McCoy and Mason O'Neal winning by fall to counter a win by the Knights' Brody Girton at 160 pounds. Northview rallied back to get a pin from Miller and Sampson and a forfeit win by See to edge out front 21-12 at the top of the lineup.

Nicosin continued the run by the Knights with his 25-second pin of Nahan Barney at 106 pounds. However, Sullivan roared back to get falls at 113 from Joe Gilham, a forfeit at 120 and a fall at 126 from Cory Orndorff. Jackson Copper broke the streak for the Knights with a fall at 132 pounds to put his team ahead 33-30. From that point however, Sullivan earned bonus points via fall at 138 (Colt Thompson) and 145 (Jed Cox) to put the match out of reach.

Baylor Girton battled back in the final match at 152 pounds to score a takedown in the closing seconds for an exciting 11-10, but the Arrows won the war by a 42-36 score.

The final match of the bout with Gibson Southern did have some clout as Trey Boor came out the hero of a 42-40 victory as he pinned his 138-pound opponent to give the Knights six team points and the victory.

Brody Girton won his match by fall and the Knights scored forfeit wins at 182 through 285. Caleb Nicosin won by fall at 106 pounds before Gibson Southern fought back to claim wins at 113, 120, 126 and 132 to take a 40-38 team edge. That set up the final match of the dual with the winner earning a minimum of three team points.

Boor didn't waste much time with Alex Huelsman as he put the Titan on his back in just 1:44 to give Northview a victory.

The remainder of the day's matches were comfortable victories for Northview as it defeated Robinson, Ill. in the opener by a 54-26 score before winning against Gibson Southern. The Knights drilled Lawrenceville, Ill. by a 65-17 victory and then finished off the day with a 52-30 victory against Evansville Harrison.

Though they didn't win a championship, the Knights got 4-1 afternoons from Boor and both Brody and Baylor Girton in the middle of the lineup, which Mikesell hopes, bodes well for the upcoming WIC Meet and the sectional.

"For all four of those guys we're hoping to go deep in the tournament and obviously this is the time to start wrestling well. Hopefully, Jesse, Caleb, Justin and Aaron are putting it together at the right time. We've got some other guys in there that can sneak up on some people too. We'll just keep our nose to the grindstone. Sullivan is the team to beat next week at the WIC if we want to keep the trophy where we want it to be. We just need to figure out how to score more points then them next week."
