Pilot Michael David Clawson, 51, Brazil, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, in a helicopter accident while serving his country in Afghanistan.

He was born Dec. 15, 1960, in Kalamazoo, Mich., to Paul Mack Clawson and Miriam Florene Brubaker Clawson.

Mike was a pilot for AAR Airlift as a contractor for the Department of Defense.

Survivors include his wife Annette Hatton Clawson, sons Michael Clawson, Wesley Clawson and Matthew Clawson, Brazil, daughters Katie Clawson and Emma Clawson, Brazil, sisters Patricia Klein and her husband Jerry, Grand Rapids, Mich., Kathleen Brandon and her husband Bruce, South Haven, Mich., and Paula Haecker and her husband Bill, Mattawan, Mich., father-in-law and mother-in-law Roger and Patricia Hatton, Tempe, Ariz., brother-in-law Gary Hatton, Tempe, Ariz., sister-in-law Cheryl Fenel and her husband Tom, Phoenix, Ariz., and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

Mike was a member of St. Joseph University Parish and the Knights of Columbus.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the Arizona National Guard, where he attained the rank of Major as a helicopter pilot.

Mike was a member of FFA and judged dairy cattle. He was formerly a dairy farm manager, police officer, and flew helicopters for Lifeline.

Mike has flown in the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Afghanistan.

He had a strong faith and loved his family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, in St. Joseph University Parish, 113 S. 5th St., Terre Haute, with Friar John Bamman, Friar Mark Weaver, Father Rick Ginther and Father Harold Rightor officiating.

Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, with military services by V.F.W. Post No. 972.

Visitation will be two hours prior to services Friday at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., Terre Haute.
