The Northview wrestling team has come a long way this season, starting the year with one of the youngest teams in the area. On Saturday, the Knights continued their postseason run by advancing seven wrestlers to this weekend's Bloomington South Regional. The Knights also claimed a pair of championships as Aaron See (220 lbs.) and Justin Sampson (285 lbs.) wrapped up the day on top of the podium for Northview.

The Bloomington South Panthers continued their championship streak with their fourth straight team title and 35th overall.

For Northview's See, his championship bout pin over the Panthers' Zachary Dobos was a bit of retribution after losing in the title match last season.

"This feels really good. Last year I lost in the championship and I knew I didn't want to feel that again. I just wanted to go out there and do what I had to do," See commented. "You have to focus on each match, one at a time. I was the No. 1 seed so I felt like the target was on my back so you have to wrestle to your potential. It's really important to win the sectional heading into the regional. So next week I hope to do the same thing."

"I'm real proud of Aaron. He's worked really hard to make himself big and strong," Mikesell said. "He overpowered kids today. (In the final) he snapped the kid down to a front headlock and in to a cradle, which is a pretty overpowering move. I'm just real proud of Aaron and all of his hard work and dedication in the summer. He's gone to Florida and wrestled. He works really hard in the weight room."

Sampson wasn't even wrestling at the varsity level last season so his 6-2 decision against Bloomington South's Guss Dajani was just as special to both his coach and the junior 285-pounder.

"To be honest, that shows what dedication in the off-season can do," Northview coach Dan Mikesell said of Sampson's title. "He didn't wrestle any varsity last year, he didn't have any experience, but when you put yourself in the position he did, you go to the state tournaments, you go to nationals in the summer, you aren't intimidated by big matches. I think some of our kids need to look at Justin and what he did and realize that is the secret. That is what makes you better is that off-season wrestling. Certainly he's going to be somebody we'll build our team around next year."

"All the work in the off-season, I do Freestyle and Greco Roman and went to both nationals for them. It really paid off," Sampson said of his summer of competition's payoff in the prep postseason. "It feels amazing to see all the hard work payoff from the off-season."

The Panthers dominated the championship round with eight titles overall on the way to a total of 294 points. Terre Haute South's Tsali Lough (160 lbs.) repeated as a sectional champion and the Braves' got a title from Dakota Thacker at 182 to place second as a team with 198 points. The Knights claimed third as a team and advanced four wrestlers to the championship match. Edgewood was a surprising fourth paced by Seth Clawson's 113-pound title. After claiming a conference title last weekend, Sullivan was a disappointing fifth ahead of Terre Haute North, West Vigo, Bloomington North and Owen Valley.

"I'm pretty happy getting seven kids (to regional). That's half of our team. We've come a long way as a young team. I think the team is starting to pull together and gel at the right time," Mikesell said. "We had a good showing last week (at conference) and we had an even better one this week."

Also advancing to the finals for Northview were Caleb Nicosin (106 lbs) and Jesse Miller (195 lbs.). Nicosin faced Bloomington South's Griffin Schermer and had control early in the bout before Schermer caught him for a pin during the second period.

For Miller, his re-match against West Vigo's Ben Bird, was another close bout following Miller's victory at the WIC Tourney and an earlier season victory by Bird.

On Saturday, Bird got a late takedown to pull ahead of Miller in the third period and the Knights' junior wasn't able to gain the equalizer in a 5-2 defeat.

"Jesse is 1-2 against the kid now, but I think he'll get a good draw (in regional) and can have a good chance to get out," Mikesell said.

Placing third for Northview was Baylor and Brody Girton, who each won their final match by fall to advance at 145 and 160 pounds.

Jackson Copper also moves on for Northview with his fourth-place at 132 pounds.

The next round of the team tournament is Wednesday at Martinsville where the Panthers will take on the winner of the Mooresville Sectional. Individuals that qualified for the regional will wrestle at Bloomington South on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
