Ernie was born April 27, 1938 in Cory, Ind., to Clarence D. and Martha Jewel (Modesitt) Jackson. He married Marsha E. (Ames) Jackson on May 4, 1962, and was a loving and devoted husband for 50 years.
He was a remarkable father to Jane Elizabeth Jackson-Mace, father-in-law to John D. Mace and grandfather to Mannah and Asher Mace, Brazil. He was brother to Esther M. Reagin, Cory, Wayne R. Jackson and his wife Patty, Cory, and William Jackson, Kettering, Ohio.
Ernie graduated from Cory High School in 1956, and attended Indiana State College. He was a retired member of the United Mine Workers of America from the Amax, Chinook Mine, and previously had worked as an agent for American States Insurance and Farm Bureau Insurance.
He was a member of Terre Haute First Baptist Church, a member of the Emmaus Community (Walk #8), and was a veteran of the Indiana Air National Guard. Ernie enjoyed golf, traveling and his winter home in Florida, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was a friend to all, never meeting a stranger and will be sadly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joanna F. Minor. Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, from 4-8 p.m., in Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with funeral services on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at 11 a.m., in the funeral home with Reverend Bernie Jackson officiating and Pastor Bob Kumpf participating.
Burial will be in Calcutta Cemetery, Brazil. If friends so desire, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Ernie Jackson Memorial Fund c/o Wabash Valley Community Foundation, 2901 Ohio Blvd., Suite #153, Terre Haute, Ind., 47803 (envelopes will be available at the funeral home).
