NCMS students honor band and choir with mosaic

North Clay Middle School seventh-graders Kayla Eckhart, Kaitlynn Harris and Cameron Carroll stayed after school for more than a month helping to create a mosaic that is now a permanent decorative fixture in the NCMS band and choir hallway. In total, approximately 50 students contributed to the piece of artwork.
Students' artistic endeavors will now permanently decorate the hallways at North Clay Middle School (NCMS).

For more than a month, approximately 50 NCMS students worked during and after school creating a mosaic to recognize band and choir pupils.

"It's a really nice thing for our band and choir members to be recognized and not feel left out," seventh-grader Kaitlynn Harris said. "It lets the band and choir know they are just as important."

Participating students were members of Brett Haviland and Diane Hines art classes and the NCMS art club.

The students cut and glued tiles with special tools.

"It started out as a wooden board that (Haviland) drew a picture on," seventh-grader Kayla Eckhart said. "We mixed water with the grout, which is kind of like cement, and put the grout in between all the tiles. We worked as a team and had to take turns."

Seventh-grader Cameron Carroll agreed with her classmates that making sure the objects were symmetrical and even was the biggest challenge.

"The knots on the side were really hard to do and cutting the tile to be the exact size and shape," Carroll said. "We didn't have enough tiles of one color to finish the paint brush, so we had to use black and blue tiles."

Each student contributed to certain portions of the mosaic.

"Working on the paint brush was the main thing I did," Carroll said.

Eckart added, "I worked on the pencils and around the piano keys. I am into art, but I've never done anything like that before."

Harris said she wishes she and her classmates could do another mosaic.

"Once you start and finish a project, it's sad when you don't get to work on it again," Harris said. "I think it looks really good, and we did a good job."

Haviland said Harris may get her chance.

"This was all possible because of a mini-grant from the school," Haviland said. "We have enough materials to do another one. We knew this would be a great project because so many kids could be a part of it."

The students also agree they like the idea of their project being displayed for years to come.

"It's cool because it's going to be there for a long time," Carroll said. "I can show it to my little sisters and to my kids someday and say, 'I made that.'"

Eckhart added, "Maybe when my kids come to school here, they can say, "My mom did that.'"

Haviland said she thinks the project was a great way to promote the arts and get students involved.

"It's great these students could be a part of something permanent," Haviland said. "They worked very hard and fixed the problems when they saw if something wasn't symmetrical or even."

She added there are also other students NCMS plans to recognize with artistic talent.

"A former teacher who retired from here last year, Steve Pfrank, has made it his mission to recognize artistic students."

Haviland said every semester Pfrank will have a committee of three judges select a student's artwork to have matted, framed and displayed down the NCMS hallways.

Recently, the judges chose a drawing of geometric proportions created by Kaytlin Galloway.

"(Galloway) wasn't just chosen because of her artwork," Haviland said. "Everything she's done for the last two years has been good work."

Haviland said the school plans to recognize Galloway in coming weeks.

Some students who worked to complete the mosaic include Taleigh Taylor, Katelyn Muncie, Hannah Nevil, Dayton Price, Kaytlin Galloway, Mariah Hill, Chelsea Vanatti, Kayla Eckhart, Bailey Fiddler, Cameron Carroll, Kevin McIntire, Lindsey Clark, Emily Bell, Kaitlynn Harris, Stacy Lovett and Meghan Disney.
