BLOOMINGTON -- Stand in front of a mirror. Every move you make reflects right back at you.

Through nearly 10 minutes of wrestling Saturday afternoon, Northview's Caleb Nicosin and Bloomington South's Griffin Schermer were a reflection of each other.

After three two-minute periods in the 106-pound championship at the Bloomington South High School regional, Nicosin and Schermer were tied 0-0.

Their signature moves were useless against each other. They knew each other too well.

"He had already beaten me three times (this season) and I wanted to beat him real bad. We just kept going back and forth, Nicosin said.

They wrestled a one-minute overtime period and still there was no score. And they kept wrestling, moving, each trying to gain some kind of advantage, but neither was willing to give up.

Both were already assured a berth in the semi-state at Evansville this Saturday. So why keep going?

"I wanted the championship, but I was just happy to make it to semi-state," Nicosin said.

Then Nicosin and Schermer wrestled four 30-second overtime periods. Nicosin made the first mistake and Schermer prevailed 3-0.

Earning a trip to the semi-state took some of the sting out of the loss.

"I'm real happy about (going to semi-state). It's my first time to do that one, so I have something to look forward to," Nicosin said.

Northview coach Dan Mikesell was proud of Nicosin's effort.

"I thought Nicosin wrestled a real hard match, kind of deserved to win. He wrestled so hard (for) eight-and-a-half minutes, nine minutes... that's the fourth time they've wrestled this year," Mikesell said.

Nicosin and teammate Aaron See are headed to the semi-state at Evansville with second place regional places. Brody Girton is going to the semi-state after a fourth-place finish.

Nicosin takes a 34-8 record into the 106-pound semi-state, while See is 38-4 and Girton is 24-10.

Like Nicosin, See had to face off against familiar opponents and rivals.

After pinning James Johnson of Seymour 40 seconds into the second round (2:40 match time), See met up with rival Ethan Edington of Terre Haute North. See pinned Edington in 42 seconds and advanced to the championship match with Iyan Bass of Jennings County .

Bass and See were facing each other for the third time. Bass won the first two meetings by one point and took the regional title over See by a 5-1 decision.

"It's just always close. (Bass) got an early takedown on us. Hopefully both (See and Nicosin) will get a draw (at the semi-state) that they can get to the state finals," Mikesell said.

Girton survived a gauntlet of competition en route to a fourth-place in a loaded 160-pound class. A senior making a last stand, Girton pinned Columbus East's Jimmy Fisher at 3:54 in the first round, guaranteeing himself a trip to Evansville.

Terre Haute South's Tsali Louigh, the eventual 160-pound champ, won an 18-5 decision over Girton in the semifinals. Then Gabe Wilson of Jennings County slipped by Girton 5-3 in the match for third-place.

"Brody Girton wrestled real well, probably the best he's wrestled all year. He kind of turned it on at the right time. He got out of (the regional). It's a pretty tough weight class at this regional. He came through and had a good day," Mikesell said.

Northview also had its share of disappointments in the regional.

After missing four days of school with the flu, junior Jessie Miller attempted to compete at 195 pounds, but was far from himself on the mat. The 6-1 loss to Caleb Cole of Scottsburg finished Miller's year at 29-10.

"I wouldn't call it a surprise, but the biggest disappointment was Jessie being sick and Justin (Sampson at 285 pounds) losing that heartbreaker 5-4 match. Justin put in a lot of time, a lot of work so to come up short like that, that's kind of heart wrenching for those two kids," Mikesell said.

Justin Sampson lost in the first round of the 285-pound class, falling 5-4 to Adam Wolka of Seymour .

Northview freshman Jackson Copper earned some valuable experience and finished the season 13-23 in the 132-pound class. He lost in the first round to Conner Montgomery of Jennings County, the champion.

Baylor Girton, a senior, also lost in the first round to the eventual champion in the 145-pound class. Jordan Partee of Madison beat Girton by 10-6 decision in the opening round. Girton closed with a 22-9 record.
