The Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods offer an invitation to people of all faith traditions to participate in the season of Lent, beginning with the Ash Wednesday Eucharistic Liturgy and distribution of ashes at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
The ritual of receiving ashes that form a cross on persons' foreheads symbolizes the need for reconciliation and healing as individuals and collectively as a society, and dates back many centuries. Ashes will be blessed and distributed after the homily, before the consecration and distribution of the Eucharist.
Also, the sisters will pray Lenten Vespers each Sunday of Lent, with the exception of March 11. Those traditional evening prayers centered around fasting, self-denial and assistance to others, which are all common Lenten practices, will be offered at 4:30 p.m., on those days in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Vespers also are open to people of all faith traditions.
