Signups for Clay County 4-H underway

Monday, February 20, 2012

Local 4-H'ers participate in a flower arranging workshop.
The Clay County 4-H Program is seeking youth grades 3-12 interested in joining the fun-filled youth organization.

The organization is a volunteer-based, informal educational program of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service.

It focuses on "learning by doing," and reaches boys and girls through small groups called clubs.

It is the largest youth organization in the nation.

According to past 4-H'ers, they like 4-H most of all for the friends they make, the fun they have, the leadership and responsibility they gain and the skills they learn.

They have fun with friends at meetings, social activities, community service activities, trips, camps and the county fair.

They can sign up for numerous different projects, including arts and crafts, collections, computers, foods, gardening, legos, photography, scrapbooking and rockets.

There are more than 50 different projects to choose from.

It is easy to enroll in 4-H. Those interested can do it in one of two ways.

The first way is to go online at www.extension.purdue.edu/clay and click on 4-H Youth Development, then click on online enrollment.

Once there, follow the directions to enroll.

The other way is to obtain a paper enrollment form from the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service Office and fill it out.

There is a $15 state fee to sign up for 4-H (maximum of $45 per family with three or more children).

When signing up, those doing so will need to select a 4-H club.

They may join any club they wish, but it is suggested signing up for one that their friends are in or is located near the home.

There are a few special clubs for some projects.

The enrollment deadline for Clay County 4-H is May 1.
