TERRE HAUTE -- The Steve Weatherford "Rush The Punter" 5K and 1-mile fun run will take place Saturday, April 28, at Fairbanks Park, Terre Haute.

Proceeds from the race will be used to purchase Born Learning Trailers for the counties served by the United Way of the Wabash Valley, including Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties in Indiana, and Clark in Illinois.

The Born Learning Trails program is an initiative of Success by 6.

The trails are used to help parents, caregivers and communities create early learning opportunities for young children.

According to officials from the United Way of the Wabash Valley, a Born Learning Trail is a kit that has nine signs with "expert approved" learning games available, each with fun and easy activities for children and adults to do together.

The kit provides "practical and engaging" ideas to inspire parents, grandparents and other adults to make learning fun and interactive.

The trail offers a variety of activities to encourage children to talk, listen, read, think, imagine and create, and helps lay the foundation for developing problem solving, critical thinking, leadership and team building skills.

"(Weatherford) is proving once again that he gives back and cares about his hometown," United Way of the Wabash Valley Executive Director Troy Fears said. "We are very excited to be partnering with Steve and the Vigo County School Corporation to help raise money for our early childhood education program -- Success by 6 -- a program that helps thousands of children in the Wabash Valley every year."

United Way officials stated Success by 6 is a community program designed to provide children with the opportunity to develop basic reading skills in order for them to enter kindergarten ready to learn. United Way of the Wabash Valley has multiple programs under the Success by 6 umbrella.

First Financial Bank will provide title sponsorship for the "Rush The Punter" event -- the first of its kind.

The 1-mile fun run (for children 12-under) will begin at 1:10 p.m. As a special incentive for the fun run, Weatherford will get a 5-10 second head start and the participants will attempt to "rush the punter" to catch him and run with him.

At 2 p.m., the 5K dash and 5K walk will also take place.

Registration forms are currently available at United Way of the Wabash Valley and the Vigo County School Corporation. Registration forms may also be accessed at www.uwwv.org.

Weatherford is currently the punter for the New York Giants. He has also played for the New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets.

Weatherford attended Terre Haute North High School, where he was a standout in football, soccer, track and basketball.

He attended the University of Illinois, where he was a First-Team All-Big Ten Conference selection in 2004.

He made his National Football League debut with the Saints in 2006.
