Coroner candidate familiar with position

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Democrat Amy J. (Solomon) Shelton is running unopposed for Clay County Coroner in the upcoming Primary election.

Shelton is currently a deputy coroner for Clay County and has been for the last four years.

Ten years ago, Shelton worked under Coroner Steve Slack for a little over one year.

As a certified medical legal investigator, Shelton believes her experience qualifies her for the job.

"I've got a lot of insight (into how the job works)," Shelton said.

"I think I do a good job at what I do."

Shelton works as a paramedic, and she is an ER nurse at Regional Hospital.

"I'm already familiar with the paperwork," she said. "I also have good working relationships with the local funeral homes and Dr. Kohr, (the forensic pathologist that autopsies are sent to.)"

Shelton said she is the CISD (Critical Incidence Stress Debriefing) Coordinator for Regional Hospital and has done multiple CISD with fire and paramedics. She is also bereavement trained, which she feels will help her as coroner.

Shelton has lived in Clay County for the past 17 years.

She is married with two sons.
