COVINGTON -- The Friends of the Covington Circle Trail announced that pre-registration for the third annual Covington 5K has begun. The race will be Saturday, June 2, and runners can register online at www.covington5k.com, or by paper registration, which is available at Covington IGA, Covington High School and all Fountain Trust Co. locations.
The race serves the dual purpose of promoting a healthy community and raising awareness of the Covington Circle Trail. Last year, 150 runners and 30 businesses and individual sponsors raised $2,850, which thanks to a matching program from the Covington Community Foundation netted $5,700 for the expansion and maintenance of the trail.
"We didn't quite get the turnout we hoped for last year, but everything went really smoothly, and we actually ended up raising more money," said Beth Mason, one of the organizers. "I think the businesses in the community are starting to see that they benefit from this event as well."
This year, the proceeds will be divided equally between the Circle Trail and the Covington Food Pantry.
"With the economy the way it is, there's an increased need for food in the community, so we thought we'd divide it this year," explained Mason.
Another change is that the race will start at 8 a.m., instead of 9, to help the runners beat the heat.
The pre-registration fee is $18 and includes a t-shirt.
Runners can register until the day of the event, but after May 25, the fee will be $20 and t-shirt is not guaranteed.
Registrations the day of the race must be paid in cash.
Medals will be awarded to the top three winners in the Women's Division and Men's Division, and to the top male and female in each 10-year age bracket.
Like previous years, the race will be followed by a free Fun Run for children.
Raquel Stultz, another of the event's initiators, said the organizers are looking for sponsors to help cover the expenses associated with the run, and volunteers who can help out on race day.
