The following is a list of upcoming area events as provided to The Brazil Times:

Cemetery Announcement

Officials have recently stated flowers must be removed from Calcutta Cemetery by April 29 in order for spring cleanup to take place.

Early Voting

The Clay County Election Office recently announced the following dates for early voting hours, which will take place in the Election Office, located on the second floor of the Clay County Courthouse:

* Through May 4 (Monday-Friday) -- 8-11 a.m., noon-4 p.m.,

* Saturday, April 28 -- 9 a.m.-4 p.m.,

* Saturday, May 5 -- 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and

* Monday, May 7 -- 8 a.m.-noon.


The Brazil City Fire Department is currently accepting applications for the position of firefighter.

Application packets may be picked up at the fire department from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

All completed applications must be turned into the office of the Fire Chief no later than 5 p.m., April 27.

Applicants must be 18-years-old and less than 36-years-old, and have a high school diploma or proof of a G.E.D. equivalent, a valid driver's license and the ability to pass the agility, aptitude, physical and mental testing requirements.

Scheduled Meetings

The Clay County Local Emergency Planning Committee will conduct its regular 2012 meetings prior to the Clay County Fire Chief's Association at 6 p.m., with the chief's meetings at 7 p.m., during the following dates:

* May 15 -- At the Dick Johnson Fire House,

* Aug. 21 -- At the Van Buren Fire House, and

* Nov. 20 -- At the Posey Township Fire House.

Kindergarten Roundups

The following are dates for the annual Clay Community Schools Kindergarten Roundup:

* April 17 -- Meridian Elementary, 6:30 p.m.,

* April 18 -- Van Buren Elementary, 6 p.m., and

* April 19 -- Staunton Elementary, 9 a.m.

Heavy Trash Pickup

The City of Brazil Sanitation Department has announced its heavy trash pickup for the month of April.

The department has scheduled the following for pickup:

* April 20 -- For the regular Tuesday route, and

* April 27 -- For the regular Wednesday and Thursday route.

The department stated it will not pick up batteries, roofing, siding, tires, building materials, televisions or computers.

Street Closing

The intersection of South Epworth Street and East Jackson Street will be closed beginning Monday, April 16, and ending Thursday, April 19, due to sewer work construction in the area.

Political Forum

The Clay County Chamber of Commerce and Clay County Farm Bureau will host a political forum Monday, April 16, at 6:30 p.m., at the YMCA of Clay County, 225 E. Kruzan St., Brazil.

The public is invited to attend the event.

Special Meeting

The Clay County Commissioners will conduct a special meeting Tuesday, April 17, at 11 a.m., in the Commissioner's Courtroom of the Clay County Courthouse.

The commissioners will consider roof repairs at the Clay County Highway Garage.

Meeting Set

The Clay County Drainage Board will conduct a special meeting Tuesday, April 17, at 11:15 a.m., in the Commissioner's Courtroom of the Clay County Courthouse.

The board will consider drainage plans for a new motel, currently under construction near Interstate-70.

Blood Drives

The Indiana Blood Center hosts hundreds of blood drives each month.

The following blood drives will take place in Clay County during April:

* April 19, 8:30-10:30 a.m., St. Vincent Clay Hospital, McRoy Center, and

* April 21, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., First United Methodist Church.

Donors can find the most up-to-date blood drive information at www.donorpoint.org, or by calling 1-800-632-4722 and selecting Option No. 4.


Pigeon Forge, Tenn., resident Terry Hall will be at Otter Creek Christian Church Friday, April 20, at 7 p.m., for a vocal performance.

A love offering will be taken.

Dinner Time!

The Fontanet Action Community Team (FACT) is hosting a chicken and noodle dinner Saturday, April 21, from 2-7 p.m., at the Fontanet Community Center and Firehouse. Cost for the dinner is a freewill donation.

Earth Day Walk

To celebrate Earth Day, Green Minds Fountain County will host a walk on the Covington Circle Trail Sunday, April 22.

The group will meet at 1 p.m., at the west pavilion at the Covington City Park, where it will share information and ideas on how to achieve a more sustainable community, then walk the trail and remove trash.

Green Minds is an informal network of people who are looking for new ways to promote local, healthy living.

All are welcome.

First Fun Run Practice

The first Subway/Rotary/Riddell Healthy Kids 1-mile Fun Run practice will take place April 23, at 6 p.m., at the Forest Park pavilion.

Applications may be picked up at all local elementary schools, at the Brazil Subway Restaurant, Riddell National Bank, the YMCA of Clay County, or at the pavilion the night of the first practice.

Tournament Of Champions

The Clay County Chamber of Commerce Tournament of Champions will take place Tuesday, April 24, at Brazilian Lanes.

The event will include a bowling contest and Euchre Tournament.

Lunch will be served at noon, and games will begin at 1 p.m.

Bowling teams will have four players at a cost of $100 per team. Each Euchre team will have two people at a cost of $50 to participate.

Cost for lunch only is $8.

Lane sponsorships cost $50.

Spring Social

The Clay County Retired Teachers Association will conduct its Spring Social at the Harmony United Methodist Church, Harmony, April 24, at 6 p.m., in the fellowship hall.

Gray Beards will perform.

The menu will consist of fried chicken, ham, baked beans, potato salad and drinks will be furnished.

Those interested in attending may also bring a salad or dessert, but it isn't necessary.

Door prizes will also be given.

All newly retired or thinking about retired teachers are invited.

Time For Crafts!

The Brazil Public Library will host a make and take craft event for youth ages 7-under at the library Thursday, April 26.

Youth may stop in anytime between 6-7 p.m., to make a spring butterfly windsock.

The craft is free and open to the public.

Library Program

The Brazil Public Library will present, "Day in the Life of a Serviceman," by guest speaker Troy Nichols, at 6:30 p.m., April 26.

Those interested in attending will learn more of what service people do during a busy day.

Healthy Kids Day

The YMCA of Clay County will host Healthy Kids Day April 28, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at its location, 225 E. Kruzan St., Brazil.

The Y will host a Health Fair in conjunction with healthy Kids Day in the gymnasium and is currently interested in vendors.
