Knights win two-of-three against ranked teams

JASPER -- The Northview softball team had its hands full at the Jasper Invitational over the weekend, but fared well against some very tough competition.

The Knights wrapped up a third-place finish in the tourney by knocking off Class 4A No. 8 ranked Floyd Central on Saturday by a 15-7 score. Northview was scheduled to face Castle in the final game, but Castle left with prom festivities scheduled later that evening.

Against Floyd Central, the Knights pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of six errors by Floyd Central to explode for the easy victory.

Jensen Swaim had a huge game, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles, a single and six RBI's in the victory. Taylor Carter also had three hits with two doubles, a single, scored three times and drove in five runs. Hope Torbert drove in a run, walked twice and was 2-for-3. Alyssa Conrad had a double and a single, scored two times and drove in a run with Kylie McKee adding a single, walking twice and driving in a run.

On Friday night, Northview opened tourney play by squeezing past by Class 3A No. 13 Jasper by a 6-3 score as Carter smacked her fourth home run of the season, driving in two runs as part of a 2-for-3 game at the plate. She also had 13 strikeouts in the win, giving up just one hit.

Conrad had a 2-for-3 game with a two-run triple and a single and Kindra Cox was 2-for-3.

Facing a powerful Class 4A No. 9 Carmel squad in game two on Friday night, Northview saw the Greyhounds homer twice on the way to claiming an 8-2 decision over the Knights.

Indiana University recruit Katie Bosler hit one of the home runs and Katie Stout, who is headed to DIII Emory, hit the other long ball for the Greyhounds.

For Northview, Whitney Halfhill had two hits with a walk and stolen base and both Swaim and Cox had one hit.

Carmel wrapped up the tourney title Saturday after polishing off Jasper, 12-3, and Corydon Central, 15-0 on Saturday. Bosler went a combined 10-for-17 at the plate in four wins for Carmel, scored nine times with four RBI's. For the tourney, Carter was a combined 5-for-12, scored five runs and drove in seven with two doubles and a home run. Swaim was 5-for-9 at the plate with six RBI, two doubles and walked twice. Conrad finished up with four hits in 11 at-bats, scored three times with a double and three RBI's. Cox produced a 4-for-10 tournament on offense, scored twice and drove in two.

The Knights (8-3 overall) travel to Plainfield this evening for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
