No. 7 ranked Panthers top Clay City

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

Times Staff Report

CLAY CITY -- The Clay City Eels gave up a two-run home run to Class A No. 7 ranked Riverton Parke's Sarah Burnham in the third inning and a two-run single in the seventh as the Panthers claimed a 6-2 victory over the Eels.

Burnham was 3-for-4 in the game with four RBI's as Riverton Parke scored four times in the seventh inning to break open a tie game. The long ball by Burnham was her fourth of the season.

The Panthers needed the shot by Burnham as Clay City got a two-run home run of its own from Madison Booe to tie the game in the fourth inning. Booe's third round tripper of the season drove in Emmie Kittle. However, Burnham allowed just three Clay City hits in the game and struck out eight in gaining the victory.

The Eels got a double from Kittle, Booe's home run and a single from Allie Miller, but could muster no more offense in the game.

Clay City pitcher Whitney Jeffers deserved a better fate as she allowed six runs, but just three of them were earned as she picked up the loss. Jeffers struck out seven and didn't walk a batter.

The Eels (5-4 overall) travel to Terre Haute North this evening at 5 p.m.
